Subject Key Objective Progression and Development by Year Groups

The following is a guide to help you understand your child’s progression through school.

All lessons are differentiated. This means teachers plan activities that enable the objective to be learned by all children including those who will find the objective challenging, those children who with hard work will secure good progress and those children who can tackle extra stretch and challenge in this subject.

EYFS

Applies paint evenly and with some accuracy to create a finished product representing something from the real world.

Year 1

Applies paint evenly, accurately and consistently to create a finished product representing something from the real world.

Year 2

Applies paint accurately and consistently including some emergent highlights and lowlights representing depth in the real world.

Year 3

Consistently and accurately paints with a growing understanding of depth and tone resulting in a sophisticated representation of the real world.

Year 4

Consistently and accurately paints with a growing understanding of depth and tone resulting in a sophisticated representation of the real world with increasing independence.

Year 5

Observational painting is accurate with highlights and lowlights used to create increasingly convincing depth, texture and realism.

Year 6

Painting evidences convincing scale, depth, texture and tone through the majority of a piece.

Mastery

Painting evidences consistently convincing scale, depth, texture, and tone throughout a piece.
