Subject Key Objective Progression and Development by Year Groups

The following is a guide to help you understand your child’s progression through school.

All lessons are differentiated. This means teachers plan activities that enable the objective to be learned by all children including those who will find the objective challenging, those children who with hard work will secure good progress and those children who can tackle extra stretch and challenge in this subject.

EYFS

Is able to identify the main characters and events.

Year 1

Is able to say how Christians prepare for Christmas.

Year 2

Is able to explain why the Christmas story is good news for Christians.

Year 3

Is able to explain why Mary is such an important part of the story.

Year 4

Is able to explain some of the key symbols throughout the story — light.

Year 5

Is able to share a detailed explanation of peace in relation to Christmas.

Year 6

Shows an understanding of what Christmas means to those outside of Christianity.
